Moo Gets Some Training in Too

Yes, it does seem like with a nickname like Moo, I should have ridden the Udder Century with Kristin. However, I decided to sleep in past 5:30am on Sunday. That's way too early to ride for me! Well, I'll have to get up that early during RAGBRAI, but only because I know there is pie in the future. :)

Anyway, my training ride this weekend was the first on my new bike. I love my bike! I met Pat on the lakefront path for a Saturday morning ride. He's a serious rider, so I was a little worried. But my lack of training was offset by his hangover, so we were well matched for the ride. We headed south at a nice fast pace. We probably averaged 17 mph, which was super fast for me since I rarely averaged more than 14 last year. I was LOVING my new road bike on the first half of our trip - I thought it made me go fast without having to exert much energy. Then...

We turned around and headed north. Um, our trip south was apparently aided by a pretty strong breeze coming out of the north. Our speed promptly dropped to 13 mph even though we were exerting more energy than our ride south. There goes my theory about being super fast on my road bike. My new bike is definitely a faster bike - I don't have to exert as much energy as the hybrid. However going at a 17 mph pace next time will probably be a little harder...unless I can talk Mother Nature into giving me a tailwind every time I ride. I belive Geezer is in charge of weather, so maybe he can work on that for July.

Overall, I put a little over 40 miles on my bike last weekend between my Saturday AM ride and riding to/from a volleyball game on Sunday night. My legs and rear weren't too sore on Monday so I was happy. But that also means I probably need to kick my training up a notch to get ready for those Iowa hills!

Go Cubs! (Yes, this is a RAGBRAI website, but my Cubs play Dad's Twins this weekend so I felt the need to comment....)
